Watamu National Marine Park - Temple Point Resort - Hotel Kenya

Diving in the Watamu National MArine Park

Only a short drive away you will find the impressive underwater world of the Watamu National Marine Park. Dive along the reef or pass a channel where you can see leaf fishes, white fin sharks or if you are lucky even toadfishes. The coral reef around the National Park shows you a diverse fauna.

Enjoy a beautiful day out in the water and explore the famous Marine Park around Watamu.

The Marine Park was founded 1968 and belongs to the Malindi-Watamu Marine Park which also includes the Mida Creek. The park spans over 5 km between Blue Lagoon in the north and Whale Island in the south. Over 110 different coral species are resident here, however you will only find few soft corals due to wave actions and turbulences in the shallow water. The easist coral to discover is the mushroom coral. In the deep water (south part) the corals are more prolific due to sedimentation. Here you can explore a high amount of fish species.

Drive with our experienced diving teachers to the best diving spots like the Coral Garden where you will find surgeonfishes, parrotfishes, marine angel fishes, butterfly and many other exotic fish species. If you are lucky you can study young sharks (harmless) in their natural environment.

Over 600 different fish species are resident here. Among others you can discover barracudas, groupers, whale sharks and manta rays. You can dive year-round whereas the best time to watch dolphins is between August and April. Between September and December you can explore the famous and popular hunchbacks.

During your diving excursion you will be accompanied by diving specialists and diving teachers. They will bring you to the best diving places and will inform you about the history of the Marine Park and its inhabitants.
